Running in the Heartland

Greetings from Indiana!

After a few travel and bachelorette party-filled days, it's back to the grind! I'm working remotely for the next few days before my little sister gets married, so I'm trying to keep to as normal a schedule as possible. Tonight, that included a short (5k) run after work! I'm not sure if it was the traveling or the late nights at bars this weekend or the humidity, but my legs were just not having it.

By the end of mile one, my legs were screaming. They hadn't felt that tight since I started running again! I'll admit that it was quite a bit disheartening, and the words "back at square one" kept echoing through my mind. However, I still managed to finish out in a decent amount of time. I think I had trouble pacing myself. The portion I did run was quite fast (for me), so maybe that was it. Regardless, I've got some work to do before my half marathon!

This outfit was pretty fantastic considering that I'm not used to running in heat or humidity! It fared pretty well despite the fact that I was sweating more than usual. I thought the tank top would come off at some point considering the weather, but I stuck it out. We'll see how the rest of the week goes!

Will SoulCycle for Tacos

So, I completely forgot to take a photo of my #WOOTD last night. But I promised I worked out!

After giving blood on Tuesday, I was feeling a bit lethargic most of the week. A few of my coworkers decided to sign up for a SoulCycle class, though, so I figured I'd join them. I'd been once before and had a good enough time (I feel like it's just an expensive spin class, but at least the cost gets me to actually go once I've signed up!), so I opted to join them.

Damn, did it kick my ass!

The fact that I ran there and back (~1.5 miles) probably didn't help, but it certainly contributed to my muscle soreness today! I did have a nice break, though, because we all went out for tacos afterwards. My margarita certainly quieted my leg muscles on the run home :)

Now, I'm on my way to Indianapolis for a week for my little sister's wedding. I'll be sharing my workouts on the road because, as I've mentioned before, there's always room in your suitcase for running shoes!

Social Running

Happy Sunday Runday! Although I typically don't run back-to-back days (I like to mix it up with yoga or whatever other active thing catches my eye), Crystal asked if I wanted to run this morning, so I figured I'd go for it.

I used to never enjoy running with other people. I'm not a fast runner, and it always seems like running comes very easily to other people. They always wanted to talk while I was sitting there huffing and puffing trying desperately to keep up with them. It really wasn't until I started running with Crystal that I genuinely enjoyed it. It's a different kind of running. It's social running.

What I get out of a run with a friend is totally different than a solo run. My solo runs are exercises in mental strength, mainly. It's all about how hard I can push myself and conquer all those negative thoughts in my mind. With a friend, it sometimes is about getting out there despite not wanting to run, and sometimes, it's a way to up the pace or change up the route. Running with friends makes me more comfortable with trying new things, whereas running solo is about challenging myself on the turf I'm already familiar with.

There's just something about a cloudy day that makes me want to wear bright colors! I love these T-shirts from GapFit...the material is just wonderful. It's nice both for daytime wear and workout wear. They are a big clingy, though, so you may want to size up if you're not comfortable with that! My new running shoes are starting to get broken in, too, so I'm pretty happy about that. I always feel weird running in brand new, spotless shoes!

Adding Some Color to a Cloudy Day

It's a pretty gloomy weekend so far here in SF. It's hot (relatively speaking), humid (again, relatively speaking) and there's no sunshine to speak of...the fog is lingering even during the day. It's kind of nice, though, because I never feel as bad spending a weekend being lazy when it's not particularly nice outside. I thoroughly enjoyed my morning of Netflix and coffee!

By mid-afternoon, though, it was run time. I was a little sore after Thursday's run with Crystal (it's amazing that you can lose so much in just two weeks away!), so I decided to do my 5k loop again. This time, I managed to push myself a bit harder. My speed was back up to normal times, but I was definitely a lot more tired than normal when I hit that 3.5-mile mark. Oh well...just incentive to keep at it!

With it being so glum outside, I figured I'd brighten up my run with some fun colors. These pants are some of my favorite pants I own...they fit perfectly! I wish Gap still made their crop pants like this but, alas, they've switched from diamond gusset to triangle gusset and the triangle just doesn't work for me. 

I've been pretty good food-wise today. I had a nice strawberry yogurt parfait for breakfast, which was a nice change from my usual weekend splurges. I made a buffalo chicken sandwich for lunch that I went a little overboard on, but I'm not planning on having a large dinner to counterbalance that. How's everyone else's weekend going so far?

Back at It!

I am stitch-free and back to running!!

I can't say that I ever thought I'd be quite this excited about running, but I'm pretty happy about it! I had my stitches removed this morning and the doctor said it was healing well enough that I could go back to all my normal activities, including running. Before I'd even left the exam room, I texted Crystal to let her know we were running tonight!

Yes, I'm aware I was grinning like an idiot for this picture :) I like to call this my highlighter shirt. I got it for free for participating in a Brooks-sponsored run a few years ago when I was working at USA Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR. It's wonderful for this time of year, when it's starting to get dark earlier but it's not quite completely devoid of light. I really need to get more reflective gear since I'll likely be running in the dark before too much longer! I finally broke down and got new running shoes...they're the same exact shoes as my old ones, just one model year newer. It felt kind of strange running in stiff, not-quite-broken-in shoes!

As per usual, nutrition isn't entirely on par. I've been doing a better job of snacking healthily (thank you, Trader Joe's, for having delicious fruit!), but wine and cheese gets the best of me! Oh well. At least I'm running again!

Corporate Challenge

It's been a bit quiet on the workout front! Fortunately, I'm getting my stitches removed from my back tomorrow and should be back to running and yoga very soon!

Today, though, I participated in the 3.35-mile J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge with a bunch of my coworkers.. I couldn't really run, but my back has healed enough that briskly walking worked just fine. Fortunately, my coworker Whitney was kind enough to walk with me! We did attempt to run for a few parts of the race, but my back just wasn't feeling so hot and I decided not to push it. Those little bits of running felt great other than my back, though! I'm anxious to get out and run again!



No clothing info today since you can barely see what I'm wearing! The shirt I'm holding (the finisher shirt) and the one I'm wearing (our team shirt) are both custom race ones, anyways!

There's Always Room for Running Shoes

Since I won't be able to share much in the way of workouts over the next two weeks, I figured I'd write something a little different than usual. As I'm sure you've noticed, I tend to travel a lot. It's not always glamorous and frequently is just a quick jump across the country to go home for a weekend. Still, there's something about travel that has a tendency to throw off your usual routine, particularly where workouts are concerned.

So, what do I do when I travel?

I'm going to drop a bit more of my Dad's wisdom on you here. When I was younger, I was notorious for trying to pack everything humanly possible in my suitcase. Once, I remember asking my Dad if it was okay to include some running shoes in my suitcase for a family trip to Florida.

"There's always room for running shoes," he said.

That has stuck with me throughout all my travels. Whether I'm going to Russia for work or just going home for a weekend, I always bring my running shoes. Whether you're going to Vegas for a weekend or off to New York, there's always someplace to run. Ask at the front desk of your hotel and they can usually give you a map or rundown of local running trails and areas to avoid. The ability to run anywhere in the world is actually a big reason why I started running in the first place!

A few other good tips and tricks for staying fit on the road...

  • Check out the hotel gym and pool. It may not always be big and fancy, but it's something!
  • Some hotels, like the Aria in Vegas, offer fitness programs for guests. Ask at the front desk!
  • Take a workout DVD along or sign up for an online workout program like Daily Burn (my sister swears by it!). These are usually designed to be done in smaller spaces, so a hotel room or guest bedroom floor should work just fine.
  • Bring multi-purpose clothing. I personally love wearing yoga pants and leggings both for fun and workouts, so they serve double duty when I travel.
  • Don't go too crazy when you go out to eat! Even though it's tempting to throw your cares to the wind on vacation, splurge where you really want to but don't go crazy at every meal.

Last Run for a Bit

Although I didn't particularly want to run tonight, I forced myself out on the road because it's my last run for probably two weeks! I'm having minor surgery tomorrow and, because I'll end up with stitches on my back, my doctor doesn't want me to run for a little while. It's worth it in the long run, but it'll be frustrating for the next two weeks! I'm still going to try to get in some recumbent biking or something.

The first mile or so tonight was rough. My feet hurt and I was a bit sore from yesterday's intense yoga. By the end of the second mile, I was feeling better. By mile three, I felt great! I ended up doing about five miles total. Not bad for a last run before a few weeks off!

Well, I had my first negative experience with Yogasmoga pants today. These pants were great when I was walking during my warmup, but once I started running, they kept falling down! It could very well be my fault (maybe I should've ordered a different size, although these are the same size as the crops that I always rave about), but I'm not sure. These are my new favorite black leggings for casual wear, though, even if I'm not in love with them while running. This shirt is an oldie but goodie from a Turkey Trot I did a few years ago. It's a unisex shirt, but great for not-quite-warm, not-quite-cold weather like tonight!

Nutrition was decent today. I did have Chipotle for lunch (but opted for no rice!) and a cookie, but everything else was alright. I'll definitely have to step up my nutrition game these next few weeks since I won't have running to help me out!

Back in Action

Back to the office after a lovely long weekend! And, since we have yoga on Tuesdays at work, it meant ended on a relaxing note! However, we had some pretty intense yoga today. I was a sweaty mess by the end of it!

Apologies for the lack of action photos today...it was already dark out by the time I got home! I was very grateful that I wore a tank top today for my sweaty class! This is one of my favorite tank tops both because of the color (mint is one of my favorites!) and because it's nice and soft. I always prefer form-fitting tanks like this for yoga...no shirts falling down into your face or anything!

Nutrition has been good today! I splurged a bit on a grilled cheese at lunch, but made up for it was a kale/berry/Greek yogurt smoothie for dinner. I recently discovered these roasted coconut chips at Trader Joe's, too, which are very satisfyingly sweet without making me feel like I've overindulged. I highly recommend them!
