Vacation, the Flu and Exercise

As I shared the other day, I started my Christmas vacation very enthusiastic about the prospect of running throughout it. After all, I was headed to sunny Florida! Why wouldn't I want to run in warm weather on the beach?!

Then, the flu decided it needed to take out my family over the holidays. First, my mom got sick. That meant missing virtually all of our family Christmas festivities. However, her fever broke before we headed down to Florida, so she still came along. Next, my sister got sick. She, unfortunately, was at the peak of flu horribleness when we left, so she stayed home. I woke up the morning we got to Florida with those beginning twinges of a sore throat and cough. Through some fanatical tea drinking and 12-hour nights of sleep, though, I was able to get through things with a bit more comfort than my mother or sister!

So, we did manage to get in one run before the flu struck. Christmas Eve Eve (two days before Christmas) was unseasonably warm in Indianapolis, so we took advantage of that and went for a run while listening to some One Direction (we're both fans and pretty unashamed about that). A few days later, though, my sister was down for the count and had to opt out of our family trip to Florida. My bout with the flu, though, fortunately held off until I was safely ensconced in 75-degree weather.

It was KILLING me not to go running in the amazing weather we have been having here in Florida! I've always been told that you shouldn't run if you have both body symptoms and head symptoms (e.g., muscle aches and pains combined with sinus congestion), so I waited until the body symptoms subsided to get my run on. I probably wasn't quite at the point where I should've been running yet, but I took it super easy (walk-running) and relaxed for quite awhile afterwards. Also, I'm not typically the running-with-no-shirt-on type, but I figured it was warm and everyone else on the beach was in bikinis, so why not?

Back to the Bay

Before I head off to a week of family, Christmas cookies and plenty of Midwestern comfort food, I decided to take advantage of my San Francisco surroundings and head out for one last run! Crystal and I had our first run together in several weeks, and the weather cooperated perfectly. I can't wait to be back up to speed, running the route by the Bay most days of the week.

It was a pretty windy run, but fortunately, these clothes held up decently. A windbreaker may have been a nice addition here, though.

Now, I'm sitting in the airport waiting for my flight, listening to Serial. Stay tuned for some updates either from the frozen tundra of the Midwest (unlikely, as I didn't really bring any cold weather running clothing with me) or Florida (far more likely...who doesn't like running by the beach?).

Yoga and Tea

Remember how I said I wanted to do more yoga? Well, I jumped in headfirst tonight!

I wasn't feeling the greatest most of the day today, but I still wanted to do something other than sitting around. So, I figured I'd try out a yoga class at my new gym. My new gym has a lot of classes designed for elderly people looking to stay active, so when I walked into the classroom and saw several older women, I thought it would be a slow, relaxing yoga session. Well, these women were badasses whose bodies flex in crazy ways. An hour and a half later, my muscles were shaking and I almost felt drunk walking out of the gym because of the intense yoga class!

Sorry about the lighting! One of the overhead lights by the mirror was out at the gym. I don't believe I've mentioned this jacket on here before, but it's a great, lightweight layer if you live in a rainy climate! It's been super rainy in the Bay Area lately, so I've been wearing it to and from the gym. I picked mine up from a Nike outlet (they always had them at the Park City one!), so check the outlets before buying a full price one.

On a side note, I tried another thing from the Influenster box I mentioned yesterday...Celestial Seasoning's Candy Cane green tea (which I did receive for free for testing purposes)! Although I'm not usually a big peppermint tea person, I have to say that this was nice for this time of year. It was like Christmas in a mug :) All this rain lately has made me quite the little tea drinker!

Guess Who's Back?

Let's try this again, shall we?

After attempting to start running again, I very quickly realized that simply being told I was free of stress fractures did not mean I was injury-free! The same tendonitis that I experienced quite horribly last winter seemed to be rearing its ugly head again, so, in order to avoid another several months of physical therapy, I opted to take a month off and start over. Although I've been intending to get back to it for a week or so now, it's been cold and rainy here.

But as of today, I'm back to Couch to 5k for the third time in as many years. I joined a gym recently, so I went there after work and knocked out the first run/walk on the treadmill and followed it up with some stretching and light weights. I also want to start doing more yoga!

Another fun thing for you today...a makeup review! I recently received a box of free samples for review from Influenster and one of the included items was Rimmel's ScandalEyes eyeliner. As an avid wearer of black eyeliner, I'm always pumped to try out something new (particularly if it's something budget-friendly!). So, of course, I had to test it this morning.

When I first opened the package, the top of the eyeliner crumbled off into my hand! I was not super thrilled about that, but I resharpened it in hopes that it should still work just fine. I'm glad I did because, once I was successfully able to use it, I loved it. It went on super smoothly and quickly. It was pretty comparable to Sephora's eyeliner that I've sworn by for years.

Who doesn't love some good black eyeliner?

It stayed put all through the day but washed off pretty easily tonight. So, I'm going to have to recommend this one! Anyone looking for a new eyeliner should keep Rimmel in mind!
