Bouldering and Red Running Pants

It's another busy week for me (although this one is due to work and travel rather than visitors!), but I managed to squeeze in a little bit of bouldering after work. I was a little under the weather at the beginning of the week, so I wasn't exactly in my best form, but I was happy to get some sort of workout in nonetheless. I also squeezed in half of a boot camp class yesterday, but unfortunately was in a rush and didn't snap any photos!

Even though I've been a bit nervous about bouldering because of my knee, I had a good time and was able to tackle a few routes that are towards the top of my skill level. This combination of clothing is probably one of my favorites for climbing — form fitting but comfortable, but also in fun colors!
So, in other news on the workout clothing front, I recently purchased a bright red sports bra that I'm really excited about. However, I also really want some bright re…

Sephora's Coming for Birchbox...

While shopping with my family last weekend, I popped quickly into Sephora to stock up on some basics. However, I ended up getting totally distracted by a new feature in their store: a build your own sample kit section. My first thought was that they were very clearly going after Birchbox (which makes sense, especially with Birchbox's Gap partnership bringing their offerings into more physical stores).
Naturally, I gave it a shot!

The premise is simple enough: grab the colorful, plastic cosmetics bag and load it up with five samples from the designated area. Although the price tag ($25) is a bit higher than Birchbox's in-store, build-your-own offering ($15), you have no limitations on what you're allowed to purchase (no forced perfume samples...yay!) and you also get a decent bag that you can reuse. I also feel like Sephora's samples offer quite a lot more bang for your buck. The ones I chose were significantly larger than what I typically receive in my Birchbox.

Back to Top Roping

While it was very fun having family visiting last week, I was anxious to get back to the gym! So, the day after they left San Francisco, I headed to the gym with my roommates for an evening of top roping. Even though I typically prefer bouldering over top roping, my knee was not feeling great after all of the walking I'd done with my guests. So, top roping was perfect — very little chance of falling and making it worse ;)

It was a fun workout :) I tackled a few routes that were a little harder than the ones I usually go for, and I had a lot of success with them! It was also fun top roping in a group of three. We each got to climb plenty and took turns belaying one another, but we also got a little bit of recovery time (slash time for me to post pictures on Instagram).
I've scheduled a few more climbing sessions with friends this week, so stay tuned for more photos! I am taking a few days away from running since…

Walking San Francisco

Over the last few days, I've been playing tour guide for my aunt and cousin who are visiting San Francisco. While that means I haven't had much time to hit the climbing gym or go running, it does mean that I've been doing a lot of walking.

And I mean a lot of walking!

Just this weekend, we've walked back and forth along most of the northern side of San Francisco (around 5 miles), through Sausalito, along Haight Street and, today, along the Hillside Trail at Muir Woods. If you haven't visited Muir Woods, you should definitely add it to your list for the next time you're in the Bay Area. It's educational, beautiful and a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The redwoods are stunning! It doesn't matter how many times I visit, I am always in awe of them. Words aren't really enough to describe them, but I'll do my best. They are just so incredibly massive! Some of th…

A Foggy Run with Friends

I had my first post-injury run with friends today! After a bright and sunny day, the fog rolled in right as we were prepping to head out, so it made for a grey, windy run. It was actually kind of nice, though, because it kept us cool and comfortable the entire time. My friend Nikki joined me. She typically is more of a group workout class person than a runner, but we had made plans earlier in the week to meet up for a run followed by a homemade, healthy dinner.

Both the run and dinner were a success! We ran a little over three miles (my knee started hurting around that point) and made decent time, despite the fact that neither of us were in the best running shape. Afterwards, we enjoyed a nice salad with chicken, accompanied by a very lovely Pinot Noir that I picked up in Napa this weekend.

July 2015 Birchbox

This summer has been a great one for me on Birchboxes so far! This month, we were given the choice of three different lip colors for the sample choice — the colors were a hot pink, a bright red and a coral color. Since I already have quite a few red lipsticks in my makeup arsenal, I went with the coral color. Aside from that, the rest of the box was a very pleasant surprise!

This month's theme was "Bold," which was very evident from the packaging! I really enjoyed this month's packaging, which was somewhat surprising since I'm not generally a big fan of loud patterns. I'm looking forward to reusing this box as a gift somewhere down the line.

Get Out and Play — It's a Sunshine Day!

If you've ever contemplated moving to San Francisco or spent a summer in the Bay Area, you've likely heard dozens of jokes about San Francisco summer (along with half a dozen misquoted versions of this quote). Generally speaking, it isn't much of a summer. It's cold, windy and foggy. Even the sunny days are cut short by fog blowing in before you've had a chance to get away from the office.
But, every so often, the weather gives us a break and we have a teeny glimpse of real summer. This weekend, we got two of those! On Saturday, it was hot and sunny, and so many people came out of the woodwork! I threw on my running shoes to take advantage of the weather, and the entire path was filled with people. I even ran by people laying out in bathing suits, and that's certainly not a typical sighting in July in San Francisco!

#WOOTD Styled: Workout Pants + Madewell Chambray

One of my favorite things to do is incorporate workout clothing into my work outfits. It's functional and comfortable, which are two of my favorite things. It makes it easy to go straight from work to workout without having to lug along a change of clothes. Every so often, I share my #WOOTD Styled outfits on here to give you an idea of how I incorporate my workout clothing into my business casual outfits.
As usual, my disclaimer is that I work in a very casual office. These outfits don't work for everyone!

I resisted the chambray trend for years, but I've recently gotten into Madewell's aesthetic. I am all about practical fashion — fashion that is fun while still feeling down to earth. So, of course, when they had an additional percentage off sale on their already-reduced sales items the other day, I jumped in to see what was up for grabs. This boyfriend chambray was a must-have!

I accessorized with my favorite workout pants and, of course, some red lipstick. This par…

Riley Back on the Run!

I'm back on the run!
After a few days of dragging my feet, I finally decided to test out my knee and go for a run after work. It was a grey, rainy day, but, fortunately, it cleared up right as I was changing into my workout clothes. I wasn't entirely sure how my knee would feel during this run, but I was hoping it would be a bit better than my last run. Fortunately, I made it 1.5 miles without any pain! I walked after that since my knee was aching a bit, then did another run interval. All in all, it went pretty well!

I know I've been wearing black Calvin Klein Performance pants in a lot of posts lately, but, trust me, they are not all the same pair! I bought some new black crops during the sale I mentioned last week. The waistbands are different, but my shirts generally cover those up. This particular shirt is a wonderful one for when I'm running in the F…

Ladies' (Climbing) Night

The ladies are taking over the climbing gym!
Kim and I met up at the gym for a bit of bouldering. We met a regular climber who showed us a few basic moves to help us improve. Neither of us have ever taking a bouldering class, so it was very helpful! We put our newfound skills to work on one of the more intense overhang walls (because the wall juts out so far, you never get more than a few feet off the ground!).
I definitely still have quite a bit of trepidation where falling is concerned. Even on the shorter walls, I was opting not to finish a bouldering problem if it meant doing a move that I wasn't 100% confident that I could execute. However, my knee is continuing to get better every day, so I'm crossing my fingers that my confidence will recover in time, too.

Back to Bouldering!

I'm back!! After my first run back last week, I decided it was time to start bouldering again. Since a bouldering fall was the reason I hurt myself in the first place, I was more than a little nervous about climbing again. However, I decided I'd stick to the easy routes and, if anything hurt, there was nothing wrong with taking a step back for a bit. I had a pretty big group of friends along for the ride, too, including my friend Kim. She hadn't been climbing in awhile, either, so we both were a bit rusty.

I was pretty pleased with how my first bouldering experience post-injury went. Naturally, I was a bit hesitant about falling, so I limited myself to primarily V1s and a few easier V2s. The big thing for me is finding routes that are easy to come back down on...I don't want to jump from the top of the wall when my knee is still coming back from a deep bone bruise!
On an apparel-relate…
